UWABC Political Advocacy

Purpose

UWABC is committed to keeping its membership informed of important and relevant political issues. We provide educational and objective information to allow each member the opportunity to make informed decisions, and encourage members to participate in the democratic process.

Each year the UWABC Political Advocacy Committee provides political functions to help our members and guests become more closely involved with issues of the day. We plan event topics that are relevant and meaningful to our members, and strive to include members with differing views. If you have thoughts about what is meaningful to you, or would like to join the Political Avocacy Committee please send your ideas to the chairperson: email political@uwabc.org.

2010 EVENTS

August 17, 2010

"Let's Talk!"

The Political Advocacy Committee of Utah Women's Alliance for Building Community (UWABC) was proud to host "Let's Talk," a non-partisan issues forum with local experts.

Setup in "speed dating" format, participants asked questions about relevant political issues. The relaxed atmosphere was fun, dynamic, and encouraged many great conversations. Experts were assigned topic tables and answered questions posed by members under time limits, giving participants a chance to explore each topic:

 • Economic Development

 • Immigration Reform

 • Energy Development

 • Healthcare Reform

 • Land Use

Since every issue has more than one side, our goal was to have a balanced representation at each topic table, giving members and guests the opportunity to discuss their most pressing political concerns. Topic experts included:

 • Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon

 • Sarah Baldwin (Utah Clean Energy)

 • Karen Gilmore (Rocky Mountain Power)

 • Representative Chris Herrod

 • Chet Loftis (Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah)

 • Kelli Lundgren (Coffee Party)

 • Senator Luz Robles

 • Deeda Seed (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance)

 • Susan K. Southwick (Tea Party).

Attendees reported learning about current issues, and even better, having a great time!

Special thanks to Diva's Cupcakes, 1560 East 3300 South, Salt Lake City for providing their back patio--a lovely venue for this summer evening event.

"Live loud. Be proud!"

A special panel presentation about women who are willing to speak out about what matters most to them. Members and guests brought their daughters and other young women in their lives to encourage them to "find their own voice" through shared experience.

Special guests included Christine Johnson, Jenny Seelig and Emma Waitzman. Panelists:

 • Shared inspiring stories from their experiences as leaders

 • Taught a thing, or two, about how to introduce a bill

 • Bolstered our confidence because every voice matters!

We all enjoyed great appetizers and good conversation with both old and new friends!

Special thanks to Wells Fargo Women's Financial Services who provided the Wells Fargo Building, 11th Floor Atrium for our event.
